Cotton production is very high in water use (just one kilo of cotton requires the amount of water a person would drink over the course of three years)! One of the best ways to reduce your impact on the planet is to go cotton-free in your beauty routine. The next time you visit your neighborhood Ulta or drugstore, bring your own reusable bag. Every time you do this, you prevent another plastic bag from ending up in a landfill, and it will save you money (in California, a bag costs an extra 10 cents) while creating no inconvenience.

There are many small deals that we can all afford to do so that the products we use daily have less impact on the environment. For example, instead of using up bottles of shampoo, choose shampoo bars. Look for mascara wands that allow you to repurchase just the product stick. The environmental damage that the beauty industry has brushed under the rug is now open for the world to see. The consumer who was lured by various marketing tactics in the past is now aware of every ingredient. They no longer want to be piggybacked by the beauty giants that caused this damage.

We are now aware that if we don’t get our act together, our planet may no longer be habitable. That awareness has today paved the way for the pure beauty movement. And one of the core tenets of the clean beauty movement is sustainability

Sustainability is now slowly emerging as a key factor in how discerning consumers choose brands they want to associate with. It’s not about carelessly throwing words like compostable or recyclable into stories, but about incorporating humane working conditions, equal pay, a transparent supply chain and a closed production system.

While glitzy marketing and sensory sensibility had reigned supreme in recent decades of personal care product popularity, the clean beauty movement today stands on the foundation of honesty and communication. While the word itself may be co-opted as a form of greenwashing like its former counterpart “natural” from the previous era, sustainability means much more than that. It is a cultural shift that becomes a subliminal part of the company. It is a value that should be embedded in the brand’s ethos and not superficially lace the covers.

Green Glam Up

While each brand has its measure of sustainability, it’s good to see that the industry as a whole has started the journey and has started to make changes in the last year or so.

This call to action has been made possible by smaller brands whose primary mission revolves around this core value. It is slowly gaining momentum as larger brands have started to acquire smaller pure brands themselves have taken the concept as a mission.

While big brands are working to be more water and energy efficient, they are focusing less on the ingredients themselves, adapting and changing the chemistry of their cosmetics and producing vegan and cruelty-free products without harmful ingredients. They also avoid animal testing, alcohols, chemical sunscreens, silicones, fragrance and dyes, parabens, phthalates, formaldehyde, SLS and all other suspect ingredients. They stick to ethically sourced, non-GMO, fair trade, water-friendly and biodegradable ingredients.

Using renewable feedstocks has seen a popular surge, with bio-based oleochemicals from plant and bacterial sources becoming an integral part of their formulations. Petrochemical ingredients derived from gasoline are a non-renewable and economically volatile resource. Many petrochemicals in conventional cosmetics are toxic pollutants that degrade the environment as well as our bodies. Sustainable brands ensure low polluting ingredients. Today, manufacturers know that consumers are not interested in the product but in the process, which has led them to switch again to natural and environmentally friendly emulsifiers, dyes, thickeners and preservatives for their products. Another terrible ingredient found in most commercial products, microbeads, (tiny pieces of plastic found in many shower scrubs and exfoliating products that end up polluting the water) are avoided like the plague by sustainable brands. Their packaging usually contains recyclable, reusable and vegetable dyes.

How To Implement Sustainability Practices In My Business?

While recycling sounds good on paper, reducing waste generation is what some brands in India prefer, while their counterparts across the world have gone ahead and are looking at biodegradable containers.

Manufacturing in small quantities and fresh batches to avoid wastage due to products reaching expiration dates in case of no sales is another huge risk they take as their manufacturing costs more than double. Yet they take on this burden only so as not to waste more raw material than is necessary. Some brands like Green And Beige have taken it a notch higher and insist they won’t make watered down products.

Some brands see sustainability as a way to give back to society, while some want to adapt the process within their business and office environment.

While indie brands have been pioneers in rewriting the rules of traditional ways of doing business and manufacturing, it’s good to see the trend hitting the big doors too. When the consumer puts their foot down, companies are forced to adapt, and it puts enormous pressure on governments to change their archaic laws. While brands like Green And Beige strike a chord with the conscious consumer, they have their fair share of problems when it comes to convincing some. With the environment in shambles, it’s hard to change equations overnight, but you have to start somewhere. We are responsible to our children.
