Newsletters, alerts and recommendations Get personalized news and exciting deals Mark stories you want to read later. It’s a new year and there’s a lot of nail information out there. Could there be a better time to experiment with nail art trends? But if you’re feeling overwhelmed by the hundreds of styles and aesthetics you’ll see, no sweat—we’ve whittled them down to the looks of the moment. We asked four nail experts from across Canada to weigh in on the hottest trends they’re seeing this year so far, and which trends they expect to stay strong.
French tips? There’s still a lot of demand, said nail technician Kenzo, of Kenzo Nail Studio in Etobicoke, Ont., who takes requests for styles like clockwork. These days, however, clients are trading in flashy white tips for a softer, blended look. “We do a very light pink for the base and then a milky French braid,” said Kenzo, who can be seen in the salon that went viral on TikTok.
The nail technicians we spoke to agree: The funky coquettish aesthetic that fueled the holidays is here to stay—and their clients are flocking to their look.
Nail Art Trends That Are Super Popular In Lockdown
“Bows are huge on nails right now, and I think [they’re] going to get even bigger in the spring,” said Amanda Campbell, a Toronto-based mobile nail technician who loves the trend. “I drew 10 bows on every finger for Christmas. I was obsessed,” she said. “I have a lot of clients, I just started asking [them]. Luckily, I’m working out!”
Bows are also an almost daily request in the Kenzo salon. What about the colors? Rose Duong, a Vancouver-based nail tech, says pink and white coquette-style nails are the most sought-after, but sage green, red and baby blue are also in demand.
Take a quick scroll through Pinterest and you’re likely to come across nail art sets featuring all sorts of thumb-stopping 3D shapes and textures, from abstract blotches to more intricate, sculpted shapes. It’s a common request for Abigail Panilan-Yan, a Brampton, Ont.-based nail technician who specializes in colored acrylics. She sometimes grabs clear gel to create texture (“I just started using it because it’s becoming more trendy,” she explained), but for more detailed designs like butterflies and flowers, she opts for acrylic powder. Sculpts and shapes. Hint: Expect these motifs to become even more fashionable come spring, she said.
Those long, expensive and ethereal sets you see everywhere? They’re called Douyin nails: styles made popular by creators on Douyin (aka the Chinese version of TikTok). Douyin-style nails are typically longer and feature “rings, super small beads or big gems and chrome colors,” said Duong, who is known for creating the look.
Easy Nail Art Trends You Can Do At Home
When Sofia Richie Grange debuted her bridal nails last year, the internet went wild. The look, with its subtle milky hue, screamed quiet luxury. But what really left a lasting impression was its length and shape: a short and delicate square that nail technicians are seeing more demand for this year. “At the beginning of January, everyone was doing the ‘big chip,'” Campbell said. However, she noted that some clients had regrets and were going back to regrowing their nails and choosing an almond shape. What about her? “I did a big chip, too, and I actually prefer it.”
Aura nails were all the rage in 2023—and still are, especially among Panilan-Yan regulars. While some artists apply eyeshadow to the nail using a brush, Panilan-Yan’s technique for creating a blurred spherical effect is with an airbrush. But it doesn’t end there. “[I’ll] even put the stickers on the nail and use an airbrush over the top and remove the stickers,” she explained. “It creates a kind of shadow design that’s really beautiful, and that’s what’s trending.”
Haven’t jumped on the chrome train yet? 2024 is a great time to experiment. Chrome finishes became popular with Hailey Bieber’s glazed donut nails in 2022, but our obsession with them shows no signs of stopping. At Kenzo Nail Studio, clients who choose a neutral look will still add a chrome finish to make them pop, said Kenzo – a classic and elegant look. But if you’ve vowed to channel your inner badass this year, molten metal detailing is where it’s at. (Pinterest’s 2024 trend predictions include everything metallic from nail art to decor.) Yes, if possible.
