It’s easy to get into the habit of just going through the motions. Everyday life can become boring and tedious, sending us down rabbit holes of thoughts and emotions.

Especially when we’re dealing with mental health issues, it’s important to practice mindfulness by doing things that keep our minds active and productive. In turn, guiding us through life with a more positive and calming presence.

Here are some ideas for practicing mindfulness in your daily life. Take a second deep breath and find something to enjoy and focus on intently.

Often when we think about our recovery journey, we think it should be linear. One day we make a conscious decision to improve our mental health, to do the necessary work, and yet we don’t see the change we expected.

It is important to realize that you are a resilient being, living daily with a multitude of thoughts and emotions. Give yourself some grace, take a break. Think about all the work you’ve already done and how much you still have to do.

Mental Health Checkup & Toolkit

Healing and recovery are not linear. Each day will offer another lesson, a trial and even peace. Keep pushing and congratulate yourself on how far you’ve come! Scrapbooking can be therapeutic for the person creating the page or album. An album can be therapeutic for the person viewing it. Although photo albums are also nice, I think it is even more important to be able to read the thoughts and memories that accompany the photos. So I’m a big believer in scrapbooks. This can still include photo albums if you are doing a pocket scrapbook that includes journaling on the photos or on separate cards.

I have a LOT of experience in these areas, so I’m excited to share some really key points:

I didn’t realize it when I started scrapbooking, but it became an important record that I later had to reference for medical reasons. When Alex started having difficulties when he was little and we were working in speech therapy, the therapist wanted to know the stages related to his development. This became even more necessary when he was diagnosed with autism. We had to fill out endless forms answering questions about his birth weight, his head size and the different stages of his development. The doctors were always impressed with how much I had written down and it made things much easier. While you may not need your records for medical reasons, it’s still very helpful to have a snapshot of your life at your fingertips. You will see changes and progress and how you overcame difficulties.

An interesting note on the layout below: I didn’t know Alex was autistic when I wrote this journal. He wasn’t diagnosed until he was 3, but my diary recorded many signs of autism (aversion to change and loud noises, lining up objects instead of playing with them, inconsolable tantrums , rigidity in routine, etc.) and it was useful to be able to tell his doctors what behaviors he exhibited at the age of 2.

Back To School

Both of my children have seen counselors over the years. I also went to counseling (highly recommend!). Members of my family and close friends went for counseling. I can tell you that in most of these cases the therapist has suggested at some point that the patient bring a scrapbook or photo album with them to the session so they can look at it with their therapist and talk about their memories . Albums are a very useful tool in therapy. It’s also a great way for anyone to remember that they matter. When you create even one page about someone, you show them that they are important to you!

When I have gone through very difficult challenges in my life, it helps me process the events by writing about them and including photos when possible. It’s up to you how deep you want to go into journaling that will be shared with others. I have always tried to be open and honest when reporting difficulties, but I am also careful to present them in a way that lets my children (or the reader) know that I have learned valuable lessons from this essay and that I help model positive reframing techniques to use as well. You can literally write your story the way you want it to be told.

When talking about someone else, try to involve them in journaling when possible. Ask a child or spouse to tell you some of their memories about the photo, then include those thoughts on the page. Email a friend or family member with a photo
