The Best Festival Fashion – It’s that time of year. Thousands of people looking for music from many different artists, at the same time, and under the threat of the sky, gathered in Zilker Park for the Austin City Limits Music Festival. But what are they wearing?
Most entertainers seem to have a keen sense of putting together a look that strikes the perfect balance of style and style. It’s an art, yes, but let’s be honest: it’s a way of life. Just like the ocean, there are rules that only the surface of the park is famous for no shade during the ACL. And every year we see our fair share of criminals.

Having lived this Instagram cycle for several years now, my reading is that the best ACL dress is comfortable at its core and light (unlovely) on things. poetry. It’s like Coco Chanel’s quote about removing one thing before leaving the house, except that she recommends always adding a body chain. Yes to the belt buckle. Yes to glasses. Yes to the scarf, earrings, jewels, and yes, absolutely yes, to the hat—bucket, cowboy, or anything else. Because if there’s one event a year that counts for saying yes to a hat, it’s on us.
ACL fashion seems to be most effective when it reminds you that it is not serious. That’s why at least one person every year dresses up like a banana. But what are some of the non-productive trends we saw in the field? Eager to be comfortable, many festers opted for the unique breathability offered by crocheted pieces. There were also a lot of bookings this year. A lower rise indicates a split. The playful look and more than seventies-inspired look came to decorate the entire base of Harry Styles who ruled the park. With lush sets and stretches of floral and patterned designs, the festival version is always open and colorful, if not neon. Sometimes it is mixed with a large table of yeehaw. As in previous years, festgoers were big on Western clothing and its many accessories. At an event with the Chicks and Kacey Musgraves as headliners, there were plenty of reasons to wear a cowboy hat or brim—or a cowboy hat and a veil.
Also large are custom, traditional band t-shirts with a favorite song or concert name, sometimes worn long and large like a dress. Most of the fans had their hair done in braids, and I heard from a friend that someone was doing their hair on site (filled with glitter) in one of the tents.

“He painted that hat himself,” Andrew Ricks’ 22-year-old friend whispered to me as our photographer took his photo. Ricks actually took the cowboy hat, got it from Goodwill, and painted it pink. She first found a bright pink belt that she decided to build her—almost completely ridiculous—outfit around, and things progressed from there. “I only had one dress planned all weekend, and it was for Kacey Musgraves,” Ricks said. “I wanted to be a representative of myself and my own natural taste.” As our photographer took one last picture, Ricks friend turned back to me. “He didn’t need this confidence boost,” he joked. Danielle Price really didn’t know if this dress would work. She went down to the wire with a few options to match a statement jacket like a fabric before this pearl dress. But when it turned out the measurements weren’t right, Price took a pair of scissors and shortened the dress. “The giving of a bride. So I thought, ‘Okay, I’m going to cut it.'” But disaster struck when Price accidentally cut the shorts. “It would show, like the whole left side of my cheek.” Using the courage given to all members of the music festival, Price opted for safety pins and a prayer, then shook the image in a good way.
