If you haven’t heard, metallics are set to be one of the biggest trends in 2024. We’re talking silver boots, mirrored leather handbags, sequins and all things shimmery. And while we feel pretty confident rocking some glitz and glam for New Year’s Eve and winter weddings, we’re less adept at styling gold, silver and bronze for the day. But fear not—we found eight incredibly chic metallic outfits that are easy to incorporate into your existing wardrobe rotation. Read on for all the best ways to wear metallics in 2024.

By far the hottest shoe trend in NYC right now, silver boots are actually easier to pull off than you might think. They add such a fun flare to any outfit, but don’t feel quite as out of place with a casual oversize button-up or flowy dress as, say, sparkly party heels. The most versatile options are either ankle boots or a western style with a block heel. The mix of such a utilitarian silhouette with a bold color helps to balance both, giving you a pair of boots that can be easily mixed with casual basics, workwear

We haven’t considered this a “fashion rule” for ages, but that doesn’t mean it can’t still be used occasionally as a chic styling trick. By adding two small metallics to an otherwise casual outfit, it becomes a consistent theme throughout your look rather than a unique statement. You don’t have to go too crazy with exact matches either, just stick to either two silver, two gold, or two bronze pieces instead of mixing and matching your metals.

How To Wear The Metallic Trend Over 40

Who knew shimmery silver pants worked so well with casual denim? We spotted this combination several times during fashion month, and are definitely planning to add it to our winter wardrobe rotation ASAP. We found this works best if you choose a darker wash jean with minimal distress over lighter washes. Keep your shoes, bag and top simple – plain trainers, a white t-shirt and a stylish clutch are all great options – so your silver trousers can really steal the show.

Gold can be a bit harder to wear during the day than silver, but it looks absolutely brilliant (pun intended) when paired with shades of beige, warm brown and creamy winter white. Start small with a statement bag or shoes before upgrading to larger pieces, such as a gold blazer, mini dress or a pair of trousers.

On the flip side, silver looks absolutely gorgeous when worn with shades of gray. Even better, a gray sweatshirt or cotton sweater can make a silver patent skirt or trousers feel totally appropriate for daytime events. To really play up the casual vibes, keep your accessories to a minimum and opt for simple shoes like pointed toes or a sporty sneaker.

The key to styling sequins for the day lies in embracing the motto “opposites attract.” Combine the party-ready skirt with your coziest, coziest oversize knit to balance out all the sparkle. You can then use your accessories to tip the scale more towards fancy (with black pumps and a velvet handbag) or casual (with retro sneakers and a leather cross body) depending on what your day has in store.

How To Wear Metallics During The Day (and Not Look Like A Disco Ball)

If sequins feel too bold for everyday, try a silver or gold lamé instead. Lamé is a type of fabric that interweaves metallic threads with matte threads (such as silk or nylon) to create a more subtle sheen than the metallic thread would have on its own. It can feel much more understated than leather or sequins, making it easier to pair with simple basics like cotton sweaters and crew neck sweaters.

It may seem counterintuitive, but one way to make a standout piece, like gold boots, feel less bold is to pair them with other equally bold pieces, like vibrant colors or busy patterns. Take the outfit above for example. Dark washed blue jeans and a matching denim jacket would have been a beautiful backdrop for gold boots, but the less-expected vibrant green hues stand out on their own and help the boots blend in more seamlessly with the look.

While metallic jewel tones are usually associated with Christmas, it seems us bloggers and fashion editors aren’t willing to end the metallic trend. With lots of golden and metallic tones starting to re-emerge on the high street as part of the Spring collection drops, I thought it would be fun to share some tips on how to wear these flashy pieces. This is my current absolute favorite, but I’m no stranger to shiny skirts and metallic accessories. Some of my favorite pieces in my wardrobe are metallic; whether it’s my pleated metallic midi skirts that I wore throughout Christmas and beyond, to my gorgeous gold Chloe Nile Bracelet bag and trusty.

Of course, there is always the possibility of having too much of a good thing; and so metallics are often best as carefully selected pieces, pieces that complement your outfit, as opposed to making up the majority of it. Opt for muted metallics when choosing larger pieces like a skirt or jacket, while you can be bolder with accessories like bags or shoes.

As with most trends I try, I usually like to start with a few accessories to “test” them and see how they work with my style and the rest of my wardrobe. My first metallic investment was mine which I first featured on the blog in this post, and to this day it is one of my most used bags! Aside from the practical style, the metallic shade works almost as a  neutral, works well and blends seamlessly with whatever color combination I’ve chosen that day! More recently I’ve invested in one in gold too, sure I’d wear it a lot – knowing how well a lighter gold tone works with my wardrobe! I first featured it on the blog a couple of months ago here.

Metallics can be matched – for example, I love to mix and match different gold tones in my clothes
