Behind The Scenes: Fashion Week Makeup Trends – Obviously, fashion shows are primarily about fashion inspiration. But the runways of New York, Paris, London and Milan have also become breeding grounds for beauty trends. Sometimes the hair and makeup looks are too avant-garde for many of us, like the bleached brows, black lipstick and sculpted faux hawks that definitely had a moment at the Fall 22 shows (props to anyone who managed to pull this off, though). Thankfully, there was plenty of everyday-appropriate beauty down the runway as well. Here’s a refresher on the top six most wearable (yet totally gorgeous) hair, makeup and skincare trends we saw in the US and abroad during Fall 2022 fashion week so you can start trying them this season — if you Haven’t done it yet.
This. was everywhere. Valentino, Saint Laurent, Christian Siriano, Gucci, Giambattista Valli… the list goes on. And here’s why it’s a must-see for anyone: There’s a shade of shade that will speak to you, whether you want to shout (vibrant teal!) or whisper (matcha green). This is your chance to use those neglected bright shades in your shadow palette. And how you apply it can increase or tone down the level of boldness; A wash around the lids is subtle, while a full-on smokey eye that extends to the browbones and along the lower lash line is a punchier interpretation.

It would be safe to assume that most women with long hair wear it in a ponytail at some point. So fresh ideas on how to style a pony, like wrapping it in a scarf or hair wrap, are bound to catch on. Models from Rochas, Sergio Hudson, PatBo, Ulla Johnson, and Molly Goddard rocked the look. Wrapped ponytails can be worn at any height on the head, however, they are most sophisticated when worn at the nape or center of the head. This look is especially fab for women with thick curls, leaving volume to emerge at the bottom of the pony.

Move over, Matt; It’s time to be brilliant. Full-on face gloss, like the one seen at Giambattista Valli, can be too OTT; After all, many of us work hard to avoid making our complexion look oily. But there’s a super-cool feel to a little gloss on the face, especially on the high points of the cheeks. To top it off, make sure your skin is well exfoliated and hydrated (Sunday Riley Good Jeans Lactic Acid Treatment paired with Sunday Riley C.E.O. Afterglow Vitamin C Gel Cream will help achieve both goals). Then add a highlighter to the cheeks, like JLo Beauty That Star Filter in Instant Complexion Booster. If that’s too much for you, then take it to something shiny on the upper lid, like model Claudia Lee, who wore a center dab above the crease. Wearing it there prevents smudges all over the lid while also opening up the eye. And as seen in Dolce & Gabbana, Kim Shui, Christian Conan and Bronx and Banks, among others, glossy lips are safer. A sheer shimmer pairs particularly well with the colorful eye shadows mentioned above.
Models at Emporio Armani’s Milan show showcased the best variety of bobs, from 70s-inspired retro to curly, soft waves, sleek, bobs with bangs. Chin-grazing hair also went down the runways of Christian Dior, Givenchy, Cormio, Saint Laurent, Versace, Rochas and more. The beauty of all these different styles? That means no matter what your hair does naturally, bobs will be on trend this season.
Fashion Month makeup artists spotted red for fall/winter — the crimson pout hasn’t had a moment like this in years. Models emerged with shades of red at Sportmax, Erdem, Tory Burch, Miu Miu, and Marni—to name a few. There were rich berry stains with blurred edges, topped with red gloss, and crisply lined and defined lips. Which is all to say: anything goes with a red lip this season. Don’t worry, you Kendra devotees. There were plenty of them on the runway. But what stood out in the world of hair parts was the deep side seen at Tory Burch, Erdem, Saint Laurent, Emilia Wickstead and Miu Miu. The look pleases almost anyone. And if you know your “good side”—you know, the one you lean forward slightly for photos—that’s the side you wear the part. Then, grab another trend from the catwalk – barrettes and hair clips – to secure the hair, as seen at Chanel and Fendi.

You can watch fashion slow live on your laptop, but to go behind the scenes and see how hair and makeup are done? It’s a little more difficult. InStyle beauty director Amy Sinnott-D’Annibel went backstage at Fashion Week shows to let you know all the genius tips and behind-the-scenes secrets the pros use to get models runway-ready:
Right now, it’s all about the pout. A clever backstage trick (used this year by Pat McGrath at Prada) was to draw a curved white line along Cupid’s bow to emphasize the shape of the lips so they look more voluptuous. If this is a little too intense for you, use a nude colored pencil for a more subtle look.

Nude nails are very popular this season, and they come in all shades from beige to taupe. But these soft, milky hues sometimes dry out. Donna Karan’s manicurists came up with a solution this season. For a flawless finish apply a layer of polish first, then a thin layer of matte base before a final coat of polish.
Paris Fashion Week: The Best Of Beauty
To give the cheeks a fresh look, backstage makeup artists use lipstick instead of powder blush. This season at Marni’s show, they actually used a berry-colored MAC lipstick. Simply place two dots on the apples of your cheeks, and use your fingers to blend the foundation already on your face. It creates a very shiny look. This is also a great tip to freshen up your makeup between day and night.
After drying and styling hair, pros have little patience for flyaways. They keep the sland slick and in place until showtime by pinning the hair flat on the sides of the models’ heads (behind the ears) with small metal clips, often using a card game as a buffer. The cards prevent the clips from leaving dents in the hair. We saw this tip at the Burberry show. And it’s super easy for you to try this at home to keep your blowout smooth while preparing for a night out. Anything thicker than tissue will work here, but we suggest getting a few aces from a deck of cards or folded dollar bills.
Call it the Little Black Sponge. This egg-shaped blending sponge is popular backstage because it makes applying foundation so easy.
Pros mix two or three shades of lipstick for runway looks, and they often store them in pill cases for easy access.

Backstage, speed is always an issue. Some makeup artists use an old-school fan to dry nails quickly or even set liquid liner in seconds. When you are in a hurry, this will come in handy for you too!
