Beginner’s Guide To Everyday Makeup

Atmosphere. You may have seen this previous post about my 10 step process using 10 products… but I have made some changes to the routine that I am excited to share.

Makeup Brush Guide: Everything About Makeup Brushes

Most of the products and techniques are the same. However, I’m finding that the placement of each product is what has changed the most. It could be that I’m quickly heading into my mid-30s, or maybe the current trend is affecting me, finding myself applying contour and blush much higher up my cheeks. This creates a more lifted look on the face.

Another big update: BROWS. I basically reshaped my brows by trimming the ends of the downward facing tail a bit. Now I tend to fill in my brows to a straighter, less arched shape. Straighter browbones also help give the illusion of a slightly lifted, youthful eye area.

Lastly, I’m focusing a little more on contouring the nose and lips. The enhancement of these additional features really helps bring everything together and creates a more balanced look overall.

I find this routine feels very easy, is comfortable to wear for long periods of time, doesn’t look sweet or over the top/too dramatic to live out your everyday life, and only takes me 10 minutes to complete from beginning to end! BONUS: all products are from the pharmacy!

Whether you’ve completely mastered your everyday makeup look or have no idea how to apply makeup, most of us could use a refresher when it comes to what’s in our makeup box. Read how to apply makeup, step by step, with our comprehensive guide below.

How To Apply Makeup For Your Face Shape

Before you get to your makeup, it’s essential to prep your skin with skin care. “Always cleanse and moisturize for your skin type,” says Sesnek. “Makeup will never be right without it.” When your skin is not properly prepared, you will not be able to achieve an even and flawless finish. Instead, your foundation will look heavy and gravitate towards the dry parts of your complexion, while your concealer will take on the cake.

Not all primers are created equal, so to achieve the best results, it’s best to choose the right primer for your skin type. We also rounded up the best primers according to Ipster reviews if you need help choosing the perfect primer for your skin. “Apply primer in thin, sheer layers,” says Sesnek. If you use a heavy hand, the primer will start to discolor or pill (not the look we’re going for). Instead, we focus a thin layer on the forehead, cheeks and chin. “This allows it to blur and mattify these areas (aka. the T-zone), which are usually the areas that are the most oily.”

Now that your skin is prepped and primed, you can start applying your makeup. While usually, you’ll start with foundation first and then concealer, sometimes we reach for concealer first. If you’re not sure, our story on whether you should apply foundation or concealer first is a great refresher.

We apply a few dots of foundation to the T-zone, focusing on the forehead, nose, cheeks and chin. Next, we recommend using a foundation brush to blend it in. While you can certainly use a makeup sponge or even your fingers, using a foundation brush is quick and easy, making it a great option for beginners (and anyone looking to simplify their makeup routine). To achieve a natural finish, start with a small amount of product and blend upwards and outwards. For more on that technique, check out our story on how to apply foundation with a brush.

Minute Everyday Makeup Tutorial

Now that your foundation is applied, you’re ready to apply concealer. Concentrate on any areas you want to conceal: under the eyes, around the nostrils and any blemishes or dark spots. When it comes to coverage, it’s important to dab, never pull. “When you apply concealer, you never want to spread it, but always pat it in place, allowing it to saturate the area you’re trying to cover,” says Castro.

Apply in spots to blemishes and blend in lightly, using either your ring finger, a concealer brush or sponge. To hide under the eyes, draw two inverted triangles under the eyes and blend the edges into the base by lightly blending them. The upside down triangle technique is not only pretty foolproof but also brightens up the whole face. The end result? A wonderful glow.

We slide a brush or velvet puff into your setting powder and tap it to remove any excess. We always want to make sure it’s evenly covered before we apply it to the skin. Then, press it onto your face to make sure you don’t move your makeup during the application process. Focus on areas that often seem to need a check during the day (usually the T-zone). If you have a special occasion or just want to create a more airbrushed finish, you can also “bake” your makeup. Check out our full baking tutorial if you want to perfect your technique.

Contour comes in powder, liquid and cream formulas, with powder being the most foolproof and therefore ideal for beginners. Using an angled brush, focus on the areas you want to create dimension. “I always like to start under the jaw first,” says Sesnek. Next, contour below the cheekbones, around the hairline and on the sides of the nose. “The contour takes a little longer to perfect, but it makes a world of difference, especially in photos,” adds Sesnek. Check out our contouring tips based on your face shape to take your glam to the next level.

How To Apply Eyeshadow

If you’re still a little intimidated by the idea of contouring, Sesnek recommends practicing with a bronzer. “Use a beige or non-orange matte bronzer to enhance your skills,” he says. Apply the bronzer under the jawline, on the sides of the cheeks and around the forehead, just like contouring. The beauty of working out with bronzer? “There’s more wiggle room, as it tends to be more forgiving,” he adds.

When it’s time to apply highlighter, we recommend focusing on the “high” points of your face that the sun would naturally hit. “Adding highlighter above the cheekbones, along the browbones, down the bridge of the nose and blending really well will give the most real dimension,” says Sesnek. While highlighter comes in a variety of forms, our team mostly chose to highlight pressed powder when first learning to do makeup, as it’s easier for beginners to use. To apply, dip your brush into the product and tap it
