Does The Mini Washing Machine Really Clean Your Beauty Blender?!
Behold, every skin’s best friend, the Beautyblender. The hot pink teardrop shape is a must-have for makeup artists and cosmetics lovers the world over, and for good reason. The sponge is soft and flexible, perfect for getting that flawless finish we all crave, and the unique shape contours your face so no spots are covered. It works with everything from foundation and concealer to skin care products, always giving you a flawless look that leaves your skin looking naturally smooth. With so much use and such great results, it’s safe to say that the Beautyblender revolution is still going strong after all these years, and we’re not sad about it.
But with time and use comes dirt and oil, leaving the trusty little sponge with every application. We’re well aware of the horror stories that have come from careless Beautyblender, such as mold, so we’re careful to treat it with respect. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to keep it clean, from Beautyblender brand cleansers to some other off-the-wall tricks. We reached out to Kelly J. Bartlett, makeup and VP of education and experience at Ever/Body, for his top tips when it comes to cleaning our favorite tool.
“Wash them immediately.” says Bartlett, because it’s the first and foremost way to keep your Beautyblender in tip-top shape. The less time the product stays on the sponge, the better. “Don’t let them sit with the products too long or they will stain.”
The creators of Beautyblender have created two cleansers for their cult-favorite product to encourage users to stick to washing the sponge. There’s a liquid blender cleaner ($18) that works just like any other: wet a sponge, pour some on, and gently massage until the water is clear and your Beautyblender is back to its bright shine. If stains are stubborn, Bartlett recommends letting the soap sit with the sponge for a few minutes to loosen it. Or there’s the even more popular Blendercleanser Solid ($16), which lets you simply apply a wet Beautyblender directly to the bar. Both are super effective and are often recommended as one of the best makeup brush cleaners.
Here’s How To Use A Makeup Sponge, Step By Step From Experts
Beautyblender Liquid Cleanser contains a soy-based formula that’s as good for your sponge as it is for the environment. It’s powerful enough to remove pesky blemishes, yet gentle enough to ensure your Beautyblender will last for months and months.
A solid blender cleaner that fits conveniently in a small compact is a no-brainer when it comes to cleaning your sponge. The rod shape makes cleaning quick and easy, so there’s no reason why your sponge shouldn’t be washed.
The downside to Beautyblender brand cleansers, however, is the price. If you wash your Beautyblender every day (which, ideally, you should be), this may be the most efficient choice. Fortunately, using a face wash can provide a similar effect. This is very convenient, especially if you’re using the same one you already have, and can be a much cheaper option than just picking up the generic brand at the drugstore.
There’s a reason Beautyblender Solid Cleanser is so popular. it’s easy and it works. Make this a more budget-friendly option by using any soap. a drugstore favorite is Dove’s Beauty Bar ($10) because it’s cheap and effective. Apply a wet Beautyblender sponge to the bar and watch marks disappear.
Foundation Brush Vs Beauty Blender
In a pinch, Bartlett likes to use Palmolive dish soap to clean her Beautyblender. “It breaks down oil and grease, disinfects, and isn’t too harsh on the sponge because of the conditioners [it contains] for hands,” she says. We especially like this trick because it’s convenient because it only requires products you probably already have.
Go ahead, get those scissors. It may seem like a pain to ditch your trusty Beautyblender, but we promise it will all be worth it when you see brand new, pristine surfaces to work on. Of course, this should be used as a last resort, as you’ll still want to wipe the product off the surface of the sponge after each use.
If you’ve ever tried double cleansing your face, you know how refreshing it can be to combine an oil-based cleanser with a water-based cleanser.
Soak your Beautyblender in the oil to loosen makeup residue and unwanted blemishes, then rinse and use a foaming cleanser to get rid of the residue.
Makeup Sponges: How To Use Them
Maintaining the sponge properly can go a long way in extending the life of your Beautyblender. Always allow it to dry completely outdoors after use, never in a plastic bag, as this can help prevent mold from forming. And Bartlett recommends avoiding any colorful bags when packing it. Colors can transfer and stain the instrument.
