It’s where I stare longingly at the beautiful lipsticks on display, picking up the tubes one by one and imagining the day when I’ll be cool enough to wear them. I always envy women who wear lipstick and admire their confidence and fashion frenzy. But me? The colors are so pretty, but I’d be stupid. It was ridiculous to even think I might be allowed to graduate from my tinted lip balm training wheels. As much as I wanted to, being a lipstick-wearing girl just wasn’t in my cards.

This whole thing sounds positively comical, I know. But when life is stressful, overwhelming, and often chaotic, it can be easier and easier to feel uninterested in yourself. And it sucks. On top of that, with chronically chapped lips that don’t look smooth and attractive no matter how much water I drink, and buy a high-strength chapstick, I feel all kinds of disgustingly ugly.

The Best Red Lipstick For Fair Skin
My lips are pretty pigmented to begin with (I guess that’s the terminology? Sorry newbie) and my Norwegian skin doesn’t look like a ball of fresh mozzarella. So I thank beauty bloggers with similar skin/lip tones whose pictures I looked at for three days straight to make sure I was picking the right one.
1. Closed-mouth smiling is very difficult. Like, really hard. do i hurt Hate? Discomfort? Are you about to burst into tears? No, I try to keep my mouth shut and laugh so you can actually see the lipstick. Looks like an A Grade Cooper apparently.
2. No lip liner was used in the making of this blog post. I am the queen of simplicity and wings. I don’t have the focus or patience yet.
3. Lipstick shades may vary depending on lighting, camera, computer monitor. I tried to show you many pictures from both my digital camera and smartphone. Annoyingly, they all look different depending on the computer/phone screen you’re using, so it’s probably useless. Hmph!

4. Awkward selfie armpits abound. Avoiding them was a struggle. Also, please excuse my wild, frizzy hair — I took these photos #straight in the shower.
Getting a “nude” lipstick shade was on my to-do list, and I’m surprisingly satisfied with my first choice! “Nirvana and the City” didn’t look too brown, didn’t wash me out too much, or just generally look gross – so, good stuff all around. The shade looks natural and subtle enough on me that I feel comfortable wearing it in most places. It’s similar to my bare lips but photoshopped for softness and consistency!
Unfortunately the scent isn’t the best; It’s a little sunscreen-y. But Rimmel’s Moisture Renewal formula applies so easily and is so forgiving of lip imperfections, so the benefits outweigh the stink.

The 12 Best Maybelline Lipsticks That Are Totally Timeless
Because of a bad, clown-like experience I had several moons ago, I was a little wary of picking up a truly pink-y lipstick. Baby Kelsey went to the store and spontaneously bought a tube of lipstick because it was in a deep discount can. Needless to say it turned out to be a horrible, over saturated and cheap looking bright pink when applied. So I thought, “Oh, that’s why it was in the deep discount bin.” But looking at my receipt it was clear that someone had accidentally put it there. It was a terrible and very expensive accident.
Fortunately, there are good pink-y shades. Revlon’s “Pink in the Afternoon” is rumored to be the closest color to the famous lipstick worn by Audrey Hepburn.
If it has no color. Word on the street is that this shade is discontinued, so it’s pretty hard to find. Interestingly, I found a healthy presence of them at the CVS down the street. Who knows!
It is a beautiful color. “Pink in the Afternoon” has a little beach pop that gives it a classic summer vibe. Now that fall is officially here, I may have to put it off, but I’m enjoying it! Well, I’m going to jump right into it. Maybelline’s “Touch of Spice” is the most beautiful lipstick I’ve ever seen.
It may not translate well in photos, but the mauve-y tones in “Touch of Spice” really compliment my green eyes – each makes the other pop a little more.
Contrasted with my pale baby skin, the shade might be a bit too deep for everyday/work wear (you can see this more in the smartphone photo on the left). However, you can bet I’ll be wearing a “touch of spice” to any special event I attend this fall! It’s so beautiful, especially this time of year.
Nyx’s butter lipstick formula is special (unlike those dork-o photos above). It’s so light and creamy that after a few minutes I completely forgot I was wearing lipstick.
The 5 Best Spring Lipstick Colors For Fair Skin
The shade “Pops Explosive” is a mix between “Touch of Spice” and “Pink in the Afternoon”. It is an everyday mauve with a distinct pink undertone. Definitely another good one.
I will definitely be going back to the store for more butter lipsticks because the formula is so nice and the colors are so fun! Similar to Rimmel’s Moisture Renew line, it forgives lip imperfections when applied. You can check out Nyx’s Butter Lipstick shades on their website.
I picked “Divine Wine” as a wild card, thinking it would be too dark for my skin. But… I can dig it.
In real life, “Divine Wine” looks like a red berry color captured by my digital camera above, and a deep brick red closer to the smartphone photo on the left. Reminder: It’s hard to laugh with your mouth shut.

While it’s definitely not for everyday wear (at least on me), I can’t wait to feel like a super classy fancy girl rocking this red for a sweet affair.
Last but not least, I decided to buy a lipstick/lipgloss hybrid for some casual, sheer color. Revlon’s Colorburst Lip Butter collection is awesome! (Again, unlike the perfectly attractive pictures above). “Creme Brulee” adds a caramel color to my lips, slightly muting their natural bright pink color. This is the only product I’ve bought with shimmer – I definitely prefer mattes, but this one is shimmery so I don’t mind too much.
This is my first experience with the Colorburst Lip Butter line and I absolutely love it! I will definitely be going back to the store to get more shades. Maybe… all the shades… this gloss line might replace my Maybelline Baby Lips obsession. Too bad it’s twice the price (#womp). It might be worth it!
Lipstick can’t solve all your problems. But stepping outside of your comfort zone and dropping a few bucks at your local drugstore is sure to yield a priceless, unexpected pick-me-up.
