10 Genius Beauty Hacks Using Household Items – It’s somehow always the case that as soon as you think your makeup collection is complete, you have to buy more of a product that’s out of stock or replace products that are no longer up to par. While you may never be done restocking your beauty stash, you are

Get more out of your products. Here are 17 useful ways to make your makeup and beauty products last as long as possible and save a few bucks along the way.

10 Genius Beauty Hacks Using Household Items

1. Extend the life of your expensive foundation by adding face lotion and making a tinted moisturizer. If you think you’ve run out of your favorite foundation, chances are you haven’t. A decent amount of product can get stuck in the nooks and crannies of a glass bottle, so pour some face cream inside and shake the bottle to remove any leftover foundation. If your base comes in a squeeze bottle, use the hack below to use up the entire formula.

2. Before throwing away “empty” products that come in plastic tubes, cut them open and scrape out what’s left. Use an empty jar with a wide opening to store the remaining product; it will be easier to scoop out your product when you are ready to use it.

3. Revive pressed powder with a strip of packing tape. The oils from your skin harden the powder, so when that happens, press the packing tape against the compact powder to remove the hardened film on top. Your pressed powder will look just like new.

4. Remove residue on your eyeshadow palette with rubbing alcohol and a cotton ball. Pour rubbing alcohol into a spray bottle and then spritz the shades that look muddy. Not only does this make the shades their true shade again, it also disinfects the shades.

5. Fix a crushed eyeshadow (or any other pressed powder) with rubbing alcohol. Pour rubbing alcohol into the product until the crumbs become a paste. Then press them together with the back of a spoon or your clean finger. Once the alcohol evaporates, your product will be solid again and ready to use.

6. Revitalize lightly dried mascara, gel liner or cream shadow with saline solution. The recommended time to keep a mascara and gel eyeliner before discarding is three months; cream shadows are about a year. But if they get a little clumpy before the expiration date, sprinkle a few drops of saline into their formulas to freshen them up.

7. Clean make-up and glue residue from false eyelashes with a spoolie brush and rubbing alcohol. Carefully pull the spoolie through the folds to remove the old glue without ruining the shape of them. That way you don’t have to buy new ones.

8. When you run out, soak your mascara in a cup of warm water to loosen the product along the sides of the tube. Just remember to toss it if it’s past its prime (aka the three-month mark).

9. If you are almost out of your favorite lip gloss, remove the rubber ring on the neck of the tube to collect more product from inside. This ring-shaped piece around the opening of some glosses acts as a scraper to wipe off excess product when you pull out the wand. But when you start to run out, take this part off with your nail so you can collect as much product as possible.

10. Fix a broken lipstick by melting it back together with a lighter. Keep the flame close enough to melt the broken edges of the stick (the bottom of the upper part and the top of the lower part) without burning them, press the pieces together and smooth the seam with your finger before it dries.

11. Mix a crumbled eye shadow with Vaseline to make your own lip color. If you don’t want to waste an entire eyeshadow palette but think the shade would work better for a lip color, crumble it up and mix it with Vaseline for your own lip shade. Store it in a small test container.

12. The same goes for making your own nail polish shade from an eye shadow. Pour some of the pigment into a clear topcoat,  shake it up and paint away. For a sheer polish, use just a little pigment and for a more opaque polish, use more.

13. Store your nail polishes, lipsticks and perfumes in the fridge to extend their shelf life. Heat and light can change the formulas of your products and change their color, fragrance and texture. Dark, cool environments are best for your polishes, lipsticks and fragrances.

14. If the top of your nail polish won’t open, just dip the handle in a cup of warm water to loosen it. Be careful not to put everything in the hot water, as hot temperatures can change the color and texture of your nail polishes.

15. Get more use out of little scent testers by pouring a few drops into unscented lotion to make your own scented lotion.

16. Makeup brushes are expensive, so be sure to wash and condition them with baby shampoo (or dish soap) and olive oil regularly. Run the brush under the tap and gently lather the ends with olive oil followed by shampoo. Rinse thoroughly and lay them flat to dry.

There’s no shortage of viral makeup and beauty hacks out there that look promising, but might also make your eyebrow raise with suspicion. For example: using a tampon to remove your nail polish? Effective, sure (it is cotton after all), but is it the most effective and least expensive method of removing polish? Probably not. The same goes for tips like using a face roller to blend your foundation when there are perfect beauty sponges or the ultimate hack not to try this at home: putting your hair in a ponytail and continuing to cut it yourself to get a DIY shag hairstyle.

That doesn’t mean there aren’t some truly genius makeup tips that really work. If you’re dying to make your eyes look more awake and perky and want to give yourself a little lift without Botox, try these not-at-all-dumb viral eye makeup tips that can make you look instantly more rested.

With so much focus on facial contouring, some of us have forgotten that the lid is the ultimate place for some subtle contouring to brighten the eye area.

The Best New Beauty Products Actually Worth Trying, According To Vogue’s Beauty Editor

“Super sharp, defined lines will make your eyes look smaller, which can be ageing,” says Global AAPI Makeup Artist Natasha Moor. “The solution? Line your line with a smudgeable black pencil, then use an eyebrow brush to lift the color from the outer corner of the eye for the winged effect. Highlight the inner corner of the eye with a champagne gold liner like the new Natasha Moor Mesmereyes Colored Eyeliner Pencil in Visionary , a vegan, cruelty-free metallic gold with vitamin E for the gentlest application. It will give the impression of an open, sparkling eye.”

Eyeliner is mostly a force for good, but its powers can be easily abused when you use it to line both your lower and upper lids, including inner corners (which can make your eyes look smaller). “Dress only the top outer corner of the lid—not the entire lid,” says Moor. “Draw the line and create a feline flick. Then blend and fade the pencil gradually from the outer edge to the center of the eye.”

Mascara is one of those makeup products that is easy to use, but not so easy to use well. Your application method can mean the difference between lashes that look flat and lashes that help widen the look of your eyes. Moor says she uses her own Moor Power Mascara and then brushes the lashes outward, “fluffing” them as she goes. “Then use the outer corner of the wand and lift the outermost lashes up and to the side,” says Moor. “Finally, for extra lift, use the wand to lift and fluff just the tips of the outer lashes as you lift them up and push them outward. So easy. Your eyes look wide open with a winged look with just mascara!”
