The Ultimate Guide To At-home Manicures – Sweet love! I have an amazing tutorial to share with you today that is a little different from my normal DIY posts. My quotes are on every post I share, which means they’re all over the internet and social media every day. They don’t look ugly, but I can’t afford to go to the salon twice or more a month. Today I’m sharing how I get a salon-worthy gel manicure at home that saves me over $120 a month!
There are so many gel manicure sets available on Amazon that it took me a while to choose the right ones for me. First, you need a kit that includes a UV light.

I have had this Jodsone kit in classic colors for about 8 months. Most of their packages come with the same items, just different colors. Colors are good but not overly attractive. I say there are only 6 colors because there are twins. However, there’s a color (32 of them) to get you through every holiday and season. It makes an amazing starter kit and provides excellent UV light.

Plus, this kit gives you all the tools you need to give a gel manicure at home. For example, large metal clippers (used to remove gel polish), clippers, tweezers, nail files, nail clippers, cassock oil, and nail polish remover. There are only 5 caps, but I found that you can get a set of 10 at Dollar Tree if you don’t buy the gel polish kit. I highly recommend this cleanser! When I say it will save you at least an hour, I mean it!
There are also many additional materials that you may or may not use. Like the French Manicure Guide, nail stickers, nail tape, toe spreaders and nail polish remover pads (my nails are dry, so plan for that).
I bought this kit for the colors in it. The classic colors that came with my first set didn’t have a lot of pinks and neutrals, so that’s why I bought it. This is a great kit if you have all the tools you need and want to go pink and nude. It has a nail polish remover that makes my at-home gel manicures last for days, even with hand paint, Mod Podge, and various other items every day.
With these two kits, I have enough polish to last me over a year, including base and top coats! Talk about saving a little money. A visit to the salon costs more than buying one of the home gel manicure sets!

First, you want the skin on your cuticles and cuticles to be as soft as possible. Soak them in a bowl of warm water with a little soap. I use Dove or Olay, but any mild soap will work. Soak them for about 5 minutes. I didn’t get a photo of this because it just soaks your finger in the water.
Dry your hands well, then trim away any dry skin or ingrown hairs. Be very careful with this. It’s easy to end up with bleeding and swelling tomorrow! Don’t overdo it, and be sure not to look down on the plugs when cutting.
Shape your nails to your liking. Mine grow naturally so I don’t force them to do anything they don’t want to do! Then use a fine-grained nail file or buffer to buff the top of your nail. You can skip this one, but if the gel polish has something to hold onto, your at-home gel manicure will last longer. These are the same films as all our paint products. You need to sand before painting!
Now wash your hands and remove all the nail polish, dirt and oil from the nail surface. When you file your nails, you usually end up with a bit of a sticky layer on the ends, so a nail brush comes in handy.

Some of the at-home gel manicure kits come with a nail cover and some don’t. I find it really helpful, and extend my gel manicures for 3 to 4 days. This Jodsone used UV light, but was not an early indicator. The Modelone I linked to comes with an initial indicator. I’ve had my manicure done for about 3 months in the beginning, so it doesn’t have to be. If you have them, go ahead and apply a light coat to your nails. I do one arm completely, then move on to the next.
There is no need to cure this step in UV light. Allow the nail polish to dry for 20-30 seconds before applying the next step.
Start with a base coat on one nail. A light coat is best, as thick coats can cause blisters, cracking, and premature wear. At first, a very thin craft paint brush and a small amount of nail polish will come in handy when applying the polish.
Next, apply a light coat of your favorite nail color. Preferably two thick coats, not the thickest coat. It lasts so long.

Cure your nails under UV light for 45 to 60 seconds. I usually go ahead and do the full 60 seconds. You will see that I use UV light in the video tutorial.
Once it’s cured, brush on a second light coat of your color gel. Heal it for another 45 to 60 seconds.
Finally, apply a thin layer of regular or top coat. I love the Jodsone t-shirt in dark colors, but I hate the Modelones t-shirt in any color. That’s scary! So, I used regular Modelones top coat here.
Now it’s time to polish your hands. Use a coconut oil pen to brush around the skin around your nails and nail bed.

Finally, stick to a good hand sanitizer. I love this airy hand cream. It contains kale and tamarind, a superfood that will make your skin happy. This brand uses Dead Sea minerals.
The longer you do your own gel manicure at home, the better your nails will look. Being a DIYer and blogger, I have to redo my nails every week or two, so I spend hours every day writing, sewing, cutting, and painting and modeling my nails a few times a week. Yours may last two weeks or longer.
Now I give myself at-home gel manicures for less than $0.65 a week. It costs me $50-$60 (with tip) to get my nails done at the salon. Can you believe these savings?! In this economy, you can’t beat that!
