[Updated April 4, 2023] The University follows updated Los Angeles County guidelines regarding masks and face coverings. Masks are now worn by others and are unnecessary in most indoor settings. Faculty, staff and students cannot require others to wear or not wear masks in classrooms, labs, offices, meeting spaces and other indoor areas. Face coverings are not required outside.

Best Practices For Using Face Masks

Although no longer required, wearing a mask at home continues to be the most effective way to protect yourself and our community from the spread of the COVID-19 virus and its variants. The university will continue to provide medical grade surgical masks and KN95 masks to all students, faculty and staff free of charge.

Wearing a properly fitted mask is an effective way to protect against airborne viruses, such as COVID-19 and other things. COVID-19 is mainly spread from person to person through respiratory droplets. Droplets of germs appear in the air when people talk, sing, cough or sneeze. Wearing a mask is important to reduce the spread of COVID-19 by protecting others if you are infected and protecting you if you are exposed to someone who has the virus. Alternatively, you might consider wearing a mask to protect yourself during cold and flu season.

Although all masks provide some degree of protection and are currently optional, a medical-grade surgical mask with a good fit (eg, N95 and KN95) is recommended for high-risk situations and for people at high risk of severe disease.

According to CDC guidelines, face covering is based on individual preference. CheckLA state guidelines for recommendations on when to wear a mask indoors, including required settings.

A properly fitted mask covers your nose, mouth, and chin and fits snugly around your face without gaps. Gaps can allow air containing respiratory droplets to leak in and out of the edges of the mask.

Best Practices For Nonhazardous Garbing

A mask with good filtration prevents the formation of virus particles that pass through the mask itself. Good filtering depends on the right materials and using multiple layers. A high-grade mask (medical surgery, KN95, N95) is recommended.

It is not recommended to wear a face shield instead of a mask or to wear a face mask like a shield, which is different than a face shield but has gaps around the face and therefore does not provide the same protection as wearing a mask.

Will masks be mandatory again? The University will continue to monitor local health conditions, comply with public health orders, and follow our University Risk Management Plan, which prioritizes health and safety while protecting and supporting our mission of student success.

As the pandemic unfolds and evolves, public health officials are actively tracking regional transmission rates and other conditions, including the Variant of Concern — conditions that could trigger a nationwide mask mandate.

If conditions change, we will follow guidance from public health experts, update our Safe Return protocols to protect health and safety, and provide timely and transparent communication on campus.
